Harris-Stowe State University broke ground in January of 2026 on a $62.3 million STEM building in St. Louis. This future-ready hub for learning and discovery will advance the University’s mission to prepare students for high-demand careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Designed by LJC, the 82,443-sf facility will include sophisticated teaching and research labs, maker spaces, and multifunctional classrooms that can be configured to mirror real-world work environments. A 600-person event venue with a rooftop terrace will encourage campus-wide engagement and with the extended community.

The student-centric development will feature an intentional layout that promotes collaboration and exploration. At the heart of the four-story structure, a transparent circulation core will put learning on display and foster interdisciplinary exchange. The highly adaptable facility will support evolving pedagogies and research methodologies by providing flexible spaces that remain relevant as academic needs and technologies change over time.

Covered gathering areas will seamlessly integrate indoor and outdoor settings, enhancing connectivity to the campus quadrangle. Thoughtful site design anticipates future growth and strengthens links to pedestrian thoroughfares. Representing one of the largest capital investments in Harris-Stowe’s history, the project will further the STL 2030 Jobs Plan, a 10-year roadmap to drive economic growth, increase living-wage jobs, and reduce employment disparities.
