The College of the Desert is constructing a $268 million campus in Palm Springs, Calif. Designed by WRNS Studio, this regional hub for education and workforce training will offer dry labs, maker spaces, AI-enabled environments, and immersive studios. The development’s main facility, The Accelerator, will house programs in digital media and arts, healthcare, and architecture. Technology-driven classrooms will prioritize flexibility to support innovative teaching and learning methodologies. With multiple buildings spanning 27 acres, the 175,000-sf complex will also feature the Culinary Institute and a multi-venue event center.

The vibrant nexus will create a shared innovation infrastructure by integrating public and professional access and economic activity into many of its specialized spaces. Defining a new model that aligns education with industry needs in the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Campus will offer dual-enrollment programs, incumbent worker training, and direct employer partnerships, as well as a variety of K-12 outreach initiatives.

Enhancing cost savings and delivering a sustainable  environmental footprint in a desert setting, the development will leverage onsite photovoltaic arrays and all-electric systems to meet 50 percent of its energy needs. The facility is slated to attain LEED Gold certification and achieve a 40 percent reduction in water use through efficient fixtures, recycled irrigation water, and the selection of native and adaptive plantings. Abundant interior glazing will showcase learning opportunities, and strategically oriented outdoor circulation routes will connect with social nodes to foster interaction and exchange.

C.W. Driver Companies is the construction manager for the project, which includes a multimodal mobility hub, a central utility plant, and an operations and maintenance building. Ground was broken in late 2024 and occupancy is scheduled for fall of 2027.
