The University of Utah Health dedicated the James LeVoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation in April of 2026 in Salt Lake City. Designed by VCBO Architecture, the $50 million facility will foster hands-on discovery, bridge connections between academia and industry, and accelerate the translation of leading-edge science into improved patient outcomes. The 60,000-sf building houses an ISO 8-compliant cleanroom, as well as advanced prototyping and assembly labs with the latest equipment for rapid design and fabrication.
The ASCENT surgical lab, a state-of-the-art clinical bio-tissue suite with 10 operating bays, enables physicians, faculty, and staff to evaluate and refine new technologies in a realistic environment. With incubation venues for university spin-offs and student startups, the four-story structure features interdisciplinary collaboration zones, training rooms, and a flexible conference center with reconfigurable seating for 120-150 attendees. Inaugural tenants include Australis Scientific, Fusetec, Purgo Scientific, Bloom Surgical, Microvascular Therapeutics, and Medicell Healthcare.
Consolidating the entire process of medical device creation and commercialization under one roof, this purpose-built innovation hub will serve as a central locus of Utah’s medtech ecosystem and drive critical workforce development in the life sciences sector. The project is being delivered by Jacobsen Construction with Revealey Engineers as structural engineer. Ground was broken in May of 2024.
