New York’s largest healthcare provider is adapting to evolving research demands by making its Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research more conducive to the needs of today’s researchers and those hired in the future, by increasing lab capacity and efficiency, upgrading infrastructure, repurposing underutilized space, and incorporating flexibility to accommodate facility modifications for many years. The renovation is the beginning of a multi-faceted approach to support the institute’s strategy for growth.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation began construction on the $454 million NYC Public Health Laboratory in June of 2022. Strategically sited adjacent to Harlem Hospital, the 240,000-sf building will provide the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene with sophisticated infrastructure for the detection and mitigation of infectious diseases and pathogens.

The University of Cambridge opened the Heart and Lung Research Institute in the United Kingdom in July of 2022. Created in partnership with the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the £60 million facility features state-of-the-art labs for cellular, molecular, and translational research. Accommodating 380 academic and industry scientists, the 86,000-sf project houses a high-throughput characterization suite, a genetics and functional genomic center, the relocated Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit, and the 10-bed Clinical Research Facility.

The University of Miami Health System broke ground in June of 2022 on the $250 million Transformational Cancer Research Building in Miami. Part of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the 244,000-sf structure will provide the Miller School of Medicine with advanced laboratories where multidisciplinary teams will discover new modalities for cancer treatment and prevention.

Cleveland Clinic will begin construction in mid-2022 on the Neurological Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. Spanning over a million square feet, the translational research building will integrate inpatient and outpatient care facilities with world-class biomedical laboratories. Designed by Stantec and Hopkins Architects, the collaborative structure will foster interaction between medical professionals and scientists to accelerate the discovery of new therapies and attract the next generation of caregivers.

Mayo Clinic began construction in April of 2022 on the $134.6 million Integrated Education and Research Building in Phoenix. Designed CO Architects and DFDG Architecture, the 150,000-sf facility will house the College of Medicine and Science and its five schools: the Alix School of Medicine, the School of Graduate Medical Education, the School of Health Sciences, the School of Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Continuous Professional Development.

Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine in Stony Brook, N.Y., has increased its capacity for ultra-low-temperature freezer storage, a need that became critical nationwide in early 2021 when the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine required that level of storage, limiting which hospitals and pharmacies could offer it. Stony Brook’s new 560,000-sf Medical and Research Translation facility contains a low-temp walk-in (LTW) Freezer Farm suite with eight minus-80-degree-Celsius permanent storage chambers and a minus-20-degree-Celsius storage corridor with a combined capacity of over 1.8 million samples. This is the equivalent storage of 80 traditional point-of-use (POU) stand-alone freezer units.

Washington University School of Medicine will break ground in spring of 2022 on a $150 million vertical expansion of the Steven & Susan Lipstein BJC Institute of Health in St. Louis. Designed by Lawrence Group to promote collaboration and discovery, the six-story, 160,000-sf addition will provide 103,000 sf of biomedical research space and a 7,900-sf BSL-3 laboratory for the study of infectious diseases such as SARS-CoV-2 and tuberculosis.

Miami University is constructing a $96 million health sciences building in Oxford, Ohio. Designed by BSA Lifestructures, the 165,000-gsf facility will create dynamic synergies between programs in nursing and allied health professions. The north wing of the three-story structure will offer classrooms, teaching labs, a fitness studio, and a wellness center. The middle wing will house research labs, faculty and staff offices, interprofessional lounges, eight simulation suites,  a wet/dry training lab, two 20-bed skills labs, and a gross anatomy lab.

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health broke ground in June of 2021 on the $750 million Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center in New Brunswick. Designed by HOK, the 510,000-sf structure will enable the consolidation of key cancer services in a single integrated location.

A public hospital in the Midwest was in the process of designing a new 12-story high-acuity ICU tower when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. They witnessed their colleagues in hospitals across the country struggling to accommodate the surge of patients who needed isolation units in facilities that were not designed for them, forcing them to shutter the revenue-generating general medicine practice in the rest of the hospital. So the Midwest hospital pivoted. They reassessed design options for the top two floors to serve as dedicated isolation/surge floors, when needed, without disrupting the operations in the rest of the building.
