The University of California, Berkeley is planning to begin construction in spring of 2026 on a seven-story facility for the Innovative Genomics Institute and Bakar Labs. Designed by DGA and Weiss/Manfredi, the development will expand research capabilities in genomics engineering with CRISPR technologies and provide critical infrastructure for life science companies scaling their operations.

Representing the second phase of the Berkeley Innovation Zone, the 169,000-gsf project will offer sophisticated wet and dry labs, support venues, and modular growth space for startups past the earliest phases. Conference and meeting rooms will be complemented by flexible work areas and administrative offices, with an event zone on the ground floor and an outdoor courtyard to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Targeting a minimum of LEED Gold certification, the all-electric structure will feature an 86kW photovoltaic array, as well as incorporating high-efficiency MEP systems and low-carbon concrete to reduce environmental impact. The facility will be able to accommodate up to 14 biotech firms upon completion in winter of 2028.
