The University of Kentucky is constructing the $430 million Michael D. Rankin MD Health Education Building in Lexington to enhance community wellbeing by addressing provider shortages throughout the state. Expanding the university’s training capacity by up to 1,200 students, the 509,000-sf facility will strategically colocates programs in medicine, public health, nursing, and health sciences, as well as housing the Center for Interprofessional and Community Health Education. HOK and JRA Architects’ design dedicates approximately 77 percent of the space to education and training, including 25 percent for teaching labs and classrooms, and 34 percent for simulation and experiential learning.
Prioritizing flexibility in response to evolving programmatic needs, the technology-rich structure will stand eight stories high on the north wing, with two additional floors on the south wing. Student-centric venues such as shared hallways, classrooms, and labs will be accompanied by research environments to foster transdisciplinary interaction and exchange. This dynamic ecosystem will drive the creation and implementation of innovative practices to improve patient outcomes.
Turner Construction broke ground on the project in October of 2023 and occupancy is anticipated in 2027.
