Christopher Newport University opened the Science and Engineering Research Center in January of 2026 in Newport News, Va. Catalyzing innovation and interdisciplinary exchange, the 83,000-sf building was designed by Glavé & Holmes Architecture to provide state-of-the art environments for learning and discovery. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Lab offers a dedicated assembly zone alongside a two-story open area equipped with a motion capture system for the testing of drones and other technologies. A maker space with 3D printers, fabrication equipment, and CNC machinery allows students to turn theoretical knowledge from coursework into practical applications, promoting entrepreneurship and collaboration with faculty.

Supplying critical teaching and research capacity for the School of Engineering and Computing and the Department of Mathematics, the sophisticated facility also accommodates programs in information science, business, and neuroscience. Students enrolled in the growing major of kinesiology can acquire vital skills for professional success in laboratories for biomechanics and exercise science. Other specialized settings include a dedicated capstone project lab, a cybersecurity networking lab, and two additional faculty-student research labs. A demonstration classroom puts science on display by showcasing the chemistry, physics, and engineering activities occurring within.

Driving community engagement and the development of industry partnerships, SERC is physically connected to the adjoining Luter Hall. Whiting-Turner was the general contractor for the transformative project, which broke ground in September of 2023.
