Colorado State University is approaching the completion of construction on the 420,000-sf Veterinary Hospital and Education Complex (VHEC) in Fort Collins. The $230 million redevelopment project was designed by Clark & Enersen to enable a dynamic pedagogy that focuses on team-based learning, hands-on training, and strategies for personal resilience. A 213,000-sf addition will house a new primary care clinic providing medical, dental, ophthalmological, and pharmacy services, as well as emergency, urgent, and critical care. A leading-edge center for veterinary education is also located in the expansion. Wet and dry skills labs are accompanied by large lecture halls and active learning classrooms equipped with next-generation technologies.

Renovation of the existing structure creates a sophisticated animal hospital for tertiary care, along with research labs and support spaces. A modern livestock hospital has also been constructed adjacent to the Johnson Family Equine Hospital to supply further medical, surgical, and ambulatory care capacity.

The reimagined VHEC will bring all four years of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program together on the South Campus to foster collaboration between cohorts, plus allowing a 30-student increase in class size for a total of 180. Community settings are intentionally woven throughout to promote gathering and interaction. Developed by Tetrad Real Estate, the public-private project (P3) is being built by JE Dunn Construction. Martin/Martin serves as engineer and Energy Studio is the energy consultant. Ground was officially broken in January of 2024 on the complex, which is is targeting WELL certification. Completion is expected in spring 2026.
