The University of Nebraska at Kearney opened the $95 million Health Science Education Center II in January of 2026. Created in collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the 110,000-sf facility addresses a pressing need for more healthcare providers in underserved areas. The architectural vision of RDG Planning & Design created a dynamic environment for programs in medicine, nursing, and allied health. Technology-enabled classrooms and teaching labs are accompanied by immersive settings such as clinical skills labs and simulation suites. With shared resources to foster interactive learning across disciplines, the three-story structure includes space for research, clinical care, and outreach. Central Community College will offer nursing classes in the building, which also integrates study and lounge zones, dining amenities, and a student health and counseling center. A grand opening is planned for May of 2026.
MCL Construction served as general contractor with Alvine as MEP engineer. Ground was broken on the development in September of 2023. Supported by $60 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, the project is part of the Douglas A. Kristensen Rural Health Education Complex, which includes the original Health Science Education Center that opened in 2015. Each structure has unique venues and functions, but all students will use both facilities as part of an interprofessional model that emphasizes team-based care.
