The University of Michigan is constructing the Center for Innovation in Detroit to accelerate technology-focused research and train the next generation of skilled workers. Designed by KPF, the $250 million facility will act as a powerful engine for job creation and inclusive talent development by accommodating both degree-based offerings and instructional courses for non-students in a range of fields. The 200,000-gsf structure will feature collaborative environments for shared discovery with industry partners, augmented by settings for conferences and events to promote the exploration of interdisciplinary synergies. The six-story building will also foster engagement with area residents through initiatives such as STEM Pathways for Youth Diversity and the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project.
The lower two floors will serve public-facing programs with classrooms, experiential learning venues, a café, a tech gallery, and shared administrative offices. Levels three through six will house advanced laboratories for graduate research programs in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, financial technology, and sustainability. The inclusion of shell space will enable flexibility and support future expansion.
Walbridge is the construction manager, with Ideal Contracting erecting the structural steel that was fabricated by Cives Steel Company. Ground was broken in December of 2023 on the facility, which is supported by $100 million in state funding and a $100 million private donation. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2027. Delivered in association with Olympia Development and Related Companies, the project is part of a $1.5 billion initiative to reimagine The District Detroit as a dynamic live-work ecosystem where corporate and community interests coalesce to drive regional economic growth. The Center for Innovation will be accompanied by a business incubator in an adjacent renovated building and a 300-unit housing tower.
