The University of New Mexico is planning to construct the $138 million Humanities and Social Sciences Complex (HSSC) at the heart of its Albuquerque campus. The 80,728-gsf facility was designed by SMPC Architects and Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects + Partners to serve as a central hub for the College of Arts & Sciences. Envisioned as a welcoming destination for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, the three-story building will feature state-of-the-art classrooms for active learning that can support in-person, hybrid, and online delivery models. Modern research spaces equipped for current and future technological needs will encourage innovation and discovery. Collocating 12 units and eight departments, the interdisciplinary project will house the Digital Humanities lab, the Humanities Research Center, lecture halls, small group rooms, and areas for individual pursuits.
Featuring a community living room, the collaborative center will provide a podcasting studio, faculty offices, a shared kitchen and dining venue, and informal settings for study and dialogue. The highly accessible structure will be fully ADA-compliant with adaptable furniture and displays throughout, as well as incorporating quieter areas clad in sound-absorbing material. A terrace on the top floor that is open to the public will offer capacity for gatherings and events, with a distinctive tower showcasing stunning mountain views. Illuminated by natural light, the complex will open onto new green spaces, complemented by a landscaped interior courtyard.
Targeting LEED certification, the sustainable project is supported by $94 million in state funds, including $52 million from the 2024 General Obligation Bond. Replacing the previous Humanities Building and other aging structures, the development will enable the university to maximize efficiency and reduce its overall footprint by nearly 40,000 sf while increasing the utilization of remaining resources.
Construction is expected to begin in August of 2026 and completion is anticipated in spring of 2029. Engineering firms participating in the design of the HSSC include Thornton Tomasetti, Altieri, Bridgers & Paxton, Geo-Test, and High Mesa Consulting Group. Acentech, Avocet Design and Consulting, Balis & Company, Fisher Marantz Stone, Jensen Hughes, and Verdacity are also contributing their expertise, as well as VDA, Propp+Guerin, and Pland Collaborative.
