Florida International University (FIU) broke ground in May of 2026 on the Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center in Miami. Designed by Stantec, the 163,000-sf project represents a partnership with Baptist Health South Florida that includes both the development and operation of the facility. The $158 million building will feature learning environments for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, as well as providing a range of outpatient multispecialty services, including same-day surgery and diagnostic imaging.
Enhancing transparency and connectivity between clinical, educational, and research functions, the integrative hub will address national provider shortages while improving regional patient access to evidence-based treatments, emerging therapies, and coordinated care. The seven-story structure will bring together physicians, scientists, and students in a collaborative setting that promotes exchange and discovery.
The state-funded facility is being built by a joint venture of Robins & Morton and Thornton Construction with Hammes as project manager. Stantec is also acting as medical planner, sustainability consultant, landscape architect, and more. Occupancy is anticipated in 2028. Located on FIU’s main Modesto A. Maidique campus, the development represents the first phase of a planned academic medical complex.
