The University of Cambridge opened the Heart and Lung Research Institute in the United Kingdom in July of 2022. Created in partnership with the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the £60 million facility features state-of-the-art labs for cellular, molecular, and translational research. Accommodating 380 academic and industry scientists, the 86,000-sf project houses a high-throughput characterization suite, a genetics and functional genomic center, the relocated Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit, and the 10-bed Clinical Research Facility. The sustainably designed structure also offers collaboration venues, shared breakout spaces, informal interaction areas, and lecture and seminar rooms for postgraduate education programs. Strategically sited near major pharmaceutical companies on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the building is linked to the Royal Papworth Hospital by an underground tunnel. Fairhursts Design Group provided architecture and interior design services with Ramboll as consulting engineer. General contractor SDC broke ground on the facility in October of 2019.
