Brown University is planning to construct the 300,000-sf Integrated Life Sciences Building (ILSB) in Providence’s Jewelry District. Designed by TenBerke and Ballinger, the seven-story facility will provide six levels of wet and dry laboratories for research programs in biology, medicine, neuroscience, bioengineering, and public health. A publicly accessible ground floor will offer a forum, a gallery, and a café, with a pedestrian thoroughfare for enhanced access to nearby buildings. Topped by a mechanical penthouse, the flexible and adaptable structure will also house office settings, collaboration spaces, and a secure animal care center. An enclosed sky bridge will create an additional link to the Laboratories for Molecular Medicine.

This hub for multidisciplinary discovery is located in close proximity to the Warren Alpert Medical School, the School of Public Health, the School of Engineering, and affiliated hospital partners. The sustainably designed building is expected to achieve a 50 percent reduction in energy consumption as compared to the American Institute of Architects’ 2030 EUI baseline. Construction is slated to begin by fall of 2024 with completion anticipated in 2027.

The ILSB will be delivered using a Lean design-build process with the total cost yet to be determined. The project team includes BR+A Consulting Engineers, VHB, Odeh Engineers, Colin Gordon Associates, Acentech, Atelier Ten, CPP, Andelman & Lelek, Heintges, Jensen Hughes, Stimson, and The Lighting Practice.
