The University of New Mexico is engaged in a visionary renovation of the College of Pharmacy on the institution’s North Campus in Albuquerque. Designed by Vigil & Associates and Architekton, the 96,518-sf facility is undergoing a comprehensive transformation to create a sophisticated home for future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Flexible, leading-edge classrooms and research laboratories will be accompanied by collaboration venues that bring learners, faculty, and community partners together. This open and welcoming environment will include an amphitheater-style staircase and a student lounge to catalyze further connectivity.
Standing three stories tall, the building’s existing structure and core will be retained to conserve materials and resources. A new high-performance façade will be complemented by solar shading and upgraded HVAC systems to maximize energy efficiency and enhance occupant comfort. Integrating biophilic design elements, the sustainable development will also feature revamped MEPF systems and communication networks. New technological infrastructure will emphasize resiliency and adaptability to support innovation and deliver a future-ready academic hub.
Supported by $35 million in state funding, the first phase of the project will modernize 37,610 sf of the facility and refresh another 17,405 sf. College research facilities housed on the basement level will remain operational during the renovations, which will be strategically planned to minimize disruption. Ground was broken in September of 2025 and completion is expected in summer of 2027.
