George Mason Opens Life Sciences and Engineering Building

George Mason University opened the $107 million Life Sciences and Engineering Building in Manassas in March of 2025. Located on the SciTech campus, the 132,000-sf facility leverages a central location in Virginia’s tech corridor to drive advances in research and education. The four-story structure houses growing programs within the colleges of Engineering and Computing, Science, Education and Human Development, and Visual and Performing Arts.

LSU Health Shreveport Plans Medical Research Facility

Louisiana State University Health Shreveport (LSUHS) will establish the Cancer and Cardiovascular Research Facility to showcase the institution’s innovative activities and groundbreaking discoveries. The first phase of the adaptive reuse project involves the renovation of 92,500 sf in a former 181,000-sf department store to provide open labs, offices, a vivarium, and support areas.

Designed by Scott Brownrigg, the development integrates individual units within a flexible layout to ensure future adaptability to varying multi-tenant arrangements.

GBMC HealthCare Opens Berman Cancer Pavilion

Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) opened the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion in February of 2025 to provide world-class cancer care and optimize patient outcomes throughout the region. The two-story, 70,000-sf hospital houses the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute and offers ambulatory care specialties such as breast cancer, genetics, gynecology, and infusion therapy. Consolidating GBMC’s cancer care services into one centralized location, the facility also accommodates onsite diagnostic imaging suites and a specialized oncology pharmacy.

San Diego State University Constructs STEM Building

San Diego State University began work in early 2025 on a new STEM facility to enhance student success and increase research access and productivity. SmithGroup designed this iconic campus destination to advance innovation and discovery while addressing growing industry demand for science graduates. Spanning 79,000 gsf, the five-story center will provide approximately 38,000 asf of space for instructional and research laboratories, including both wet and dry environments, as well as related support spaces and faculty offices.
