The University of California, San Francisco began construction in August of 2025 on the Life Sciences Building located in the Dogpatch Power Station redevelopment. Designed by Herzog & de Mueron and Stantec, the transformative facility will drive bioscience innovation by bringing together research, best-in-class patient care, and graduate-level training with venues for new biomedical companies. Standing eight stories above ground, the structure will offer 188,550 sf of institutional healthcare space, including two basement levels housing a leading-edge proton therapy center for cancer treatment.
Primary care and multispecialty clinics will occupy stories two through five, and the top three levels will accommodate 89,860 sf of laboratory space for life science business incubation. Topped by a mechanical penthouse, this healthcare nexus will also include an endoscopy suite, an infusion center, and a pharmacy, as well a conference venue and 685 sf of retail environments. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the sustainable development will leverage extensive glazing on the upper floors to enhance energy efficiency and maximize access to natural light.
The project will be delivered by Associate Capital and Webcor as part of a public-private partnership, with UCSF as the anchor tenant. The clinical space is anticipated to open in 2028 and the proton therapy center will begin operations in 2029.
