The University of South Carolina is constructing the School of Medicine Columbia as the centerpiece of its $300 million Health Sciences Campus. Supporting the institution’s evolving approach to medical pedagogy and discovery, the 330,000-sf building will feature active learning classrooms, leading-edge simulation spaces, wet and dry labs, and a health science library. BOUDREAUX and SLAM’s design for the four-story structure will establish an interdisciplinary, collaborative ecosystem by strategically colocating the education wing with an adjoining biomedical research wing that will advance the creation of novel therapies and treatments. Numerous study environments will be complemented by a café, and an outdoor courtyard with adjoining green spaces will offer a welcoming setting for informal interaction. The 16-acre site will also accommodate a central utility plant.
Gilbane is spearheading the planning and development efforts for the public-private project with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory planner. Other team members include Brownstone, Cumming Group, Honeywell, Restoration 52, Stewart, and RMF Engineering. Ground was broken in February of 2025 and occupancy is scheduled for August of 2027.
Aiding in the attraction and retention of world-class faculty, investigators, and students, the Health Sciences Campus is a central component of USC Next, the institution’s 10-year master plan. Created in association with Sasaki, other planned facilities will include a first-of-its-kind neurological hospital located in proximity to the School of Medicine. The center will leverage clinical innovation, research, and the latest technologies to deliver advanced neurosurgery, cognitive care, and rehabilitation treatments for trauma, stroke, cancer, and other conditions.
