Southern Illinois University Edwardsville opened the Health Sciences Complex in April of 2026 to provide leading-edge facilities for the School of Pharmacy and the School of Nursing. The $117.4 million project encompassed the construction of a three-story, 106,000-sf structure that links two renovated and expanded buildings via an activated two-story atrium. Designed by LJC and Christner Architects (now part of CannonDesign), the 172,495-sf complex features modern multipurpose classrooms, teaching and research labs, and a vivarium.

A wet lab and a technology-rich simulation lab offer vital opportunities for nursing students to engage in experiential learning. The collaborative hub creates an interactive environment for programs in synthetic chemistry, pharmacogenomics, biochemistry, and microbiology to foster the interdisciplinary exchange that occurs in real-world settings. Faculty offices are accompanied by student resource spaces and study venues.

Supported by funding from the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, the visionary development promises to increase enrollment capacity and elevate the education of healthcare professionals, positioning the institution to achieve a measurable impact on provider shortages throughout the state. Targeting LEED Silver certification, the sustainable project was delivered by a joint venture of Clayco and Poettker Construction. IMEG was the MEP/FP engineer and HOK served as bridging documentation architect. Ground was broken in September of 2023.
