The University of Sydney celebrated the beginning of construction on the AU$780 million Sydney Biomedical Accelerator in May of 2025. Created in partnership with the Government of New South Wales and Sydney Local Health District, the 387,500-sf structure will forge a vital link between the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the university's Camperdown campus. HDR and Denton Corker Marshall designed the two-building complex as a vibrant nexus where multidisciplinary teams of academic investigators, clinicians, and industry affiliates will come together to solve urgent health challenges.

Catalyzing the translation of scientific discoveries into groundbreaking therapies and solutions, the project will feature PC2 and PC3 wet labs, GMP cleanrooms, and core facilities for microscopy, imaging, bioinformatics, genetics, and cell and protein research. High-performance computing suites will be accompanied by a sophisticated biobank, a start-up hub, collaboration venues, and welcoming settings for clinical trials. With a seven-story circulation spine to foster interaction, the center will also offer state-of-the-art training environments for more than 8,000 anatomy students. Abundant natural light will fill interior spaces, complemented by sculptural sunscreens to reduce heat gain and glare. A flexible and efficient layout will ensure adaptability to changing programmatic requirements and technologies.

Supporting every stage from discovery through commercialization, the visionary development will set a new national benchmark for the integration of biomedical science with clinical research and innovation. Richard Crookes Constructions is acting as general contractor, with occupancy anticipated in 2028.
